It was wonderful to see the number of residents who joined us on the 27th April to thank Graham for his contribution to Matangi and to enjoy hearing about it. Speakers included Charlie Moore from the Matangi Indoor Bowls Club, Ian Wallace from the Matangi Hall Committee, Regional Councillor, Noel Smith for the Waikato Reginal Council and Councillor, Crystal Beavis for the Waikato District Council and the Matangi Community Committee.

In acknowledgement of his contribution Graham was presented with a picture that included the wording “Presented to Graham Membery April 2024. In recognition of his tireless service to Matangi. By the Matangi Community. Aerial photos 1951 and 2024” Grateful thanks go to Andrew Mowbray for bringing this idea to fruition.
Charlie spoke of Graham’s long, highly successful and dedicated career in Indoor Bowls in the Matangi, Hamilton, Waikato and National arenas. He wasn’t the only person on the day who noted that Graham always put Matangi first in his considerations. The full script of the speech is here
Ian spoke of Graham’s long association and involvement over the decades in the building, administration and care and maintenance of the Matangi Hall. The committee has greatly appreciated his leadership and dedication to ensure the highest level of care of this valued Community facility.
Graham’s involvement with local drainage began in the early 1990s. Regional Councillor Noel Smith, has had many years working with Graham on Drainage matters for the district and was keen to join the event and describe the value of Graham’s work in creating a successful and enduring difference to drainage in this area.

Councillor Beavis spoke of Graham’s background in Matangi and activities for local organisations including being the inaugural Chair of the Matangi Community Committee. She has shared the event in an article in the Cambridge News https://www.cambridgenews.nz/2024/05/saluting-our-stalwarts/
Graham had right of reply – a humble response – giving a thank you to the community members he had worked with over the years. A very enjoyable afternoon.
