Matangi Recreational Reserve Concept Plan Development begins this week.

Whether you have always known it as the Rugby Club or the Sports Club this public reserve, at 643 Tauwhare Road, is now much bigger than it used to be following extra land being added to the original Reserve through the subdivision process undertaken on the neighbouring property. This increase in land area and shape of the site results in the need to have a careful look at how the whole space can best be utilised for community benefit.

The original Reserve was established on land donated by a neighbouring farmer with the objective of creating a base for a local Rugby Club. The club flourished for some time and attracted support to build a large clubhouse with plenty of volunteer support. The building has had some struggles and it’s future is under review.

Opportunities to implement changes and developments will occur over time but rather than have facilities or changes arising in isolation the intention is to establish a Concept Plan that draws on and captures community aspirations and creates a framework.

This week Council will meet with the Matangi Sports Club, local community groups and schools to contribute ideas to an initial draft plan. In the coming months there will be a number of opportunities for residents to offer suggestions and feedback on what could be available at the reserve (perhaps including a new name!?). The Concept Plan process for the Tamahere Reserve is an example of the process that will be followed to create a draft plan, obtain ideas and feedback and deliver a document to guide future development.
